A Baby Hatch in Germany

“As the euro zone debt crisis deepens and austerity measures take their toll across Europe, the number of young children and babies abandoned across the region has increased, according to local charities.

A “baby hatch” in Hamburg, Germany. The rise in the abandonment of infants across Europe is most visible in the spread of “baby hatches” or “boxes” across Europe, where unwanted infants are left anonymously.

The phenomenon was previously more prevalent among immigrants, but it is becoming more widespread among financially desperate members of the local population.

The hatches are sensor-activated so when a baby is placed, an alarm is activated and a carer comes to collect the child. Despite the practice being widely viewed as contravening the 1953 European Convention on Human Rights, of the 27 EU member countries, 11 countries still have “baby hatches” in operation, including Germany, Italy and Portugal.”

“The hatches are usually in hospitals or social centres and consist of a door or flap in an outside wall which opens to reveal a soft bed, heated or at least insulated. Sensors in the bed alert carers when a baby has been put in it so that they can come and take care of the child. In Germany, babies are first looked after for eight weeks during which the mother can return and claim her child without any legal repercussions. If this does not happen, after eight weeks the child is put up for adoption.” ..sounds like a sensible alternative to abortion to me.

read the article, BB. but i would agree with you if that was the intent. but from what the article says that is not the intent.

    • BB-Idaho

Intent? You mean the intent of the distressed parent or the intent of the article. It must have some merit, for:
” Baby hatches as such are not known in the United States; however, all 50 states have introduced “Safe-haven laws” since Texas began on September 1, 1999. These allow parents to legally give up their newborn child (younger than 72 hours) anonymously to certain places known as “safe havens”, such as fire stations and hospitals. The laws have different names in different states, e.g. California’s Safely Surrendered Baby Law.”

  3. This, of course, will be used as another excuse for abortion.

BB, there have always been laws allowing a mother to give up a new born baby. the difference being is that those incidences you are referring to involve giving up the baby after the mother has changed her mind about keeping it or for some reason or another made a decision after the birth of the child.

the story refers tp parents who are giving up their kids because of the austarity budgets that the European countries are forced to make in order to remain solvant means less welfare being given to these parents that they needed to be able to afford raising the kids.

the whole deal is a two-edged sword for the left and one that is at their necks right now. Europe is in a negative growth rate and that is bad for any socialized nation because a nation needs a positive growth rate in order to maintain their tax base that support the social programs they enact.

and sooner or later the politicians in Washington are going to have to realize that you cannot enact new programs when nearly 50% of the people do not pay any taxes. and the rich are giving up their citizenship in droves thus depriving the government of even more taxes. then on top of that you have the IRS refunding billions of dollars illegally.
simple economics declares you cannot run a deficit budget indefinately without suffering the consequences even if you are the government.
